MSW Summer Internship

 

Position:

Full time summer internships available for MSW graduate students. Interns will conduct assessments and provide supportive counseling to children and youth ages 7-14. Interns will provide classroom groups, peers groups (either-theme based or open-ended) and general staff support around classroom management. Interns will be supervised by a CSW and will work with the supervising social worker to develop and facilitate program staff training on youth development needs.

June 14 to August 13, 2004 (9 weeks)

$400/week (pre-tax) stipend


Organization Summary:

Founded in 2001, Groundwork is a new nonprofit organization that helps young people in urban neighborhoods discover and develop their strengths, skills, and talents through effective experiential learning and work programs. Our first program, Groundwork for Youth, operates summer and after school programs in public schools serving children ages 7 to 14 who live in public housing developments in East New York, Brooklyn. Groundwork hires and trains local college and high school students to serve as team leaders for children ages 7 to 14 in a full day, 7-week Summer Academy and a four-day a week After-School Academy that features a reading-based curriculum, athletics, field trips, camping, and service learning. In addition to the team leaders, specialized instructors including certified teachers, teaching artists and other professionals play an active role in delivering services to young people. Groundwork launched its first campus serving the Unity Plaza housing development in the Summer of 2002, and the second campus in the Summer of 2003 serving the Breuckelen housing development The Unity Plaza Academy is located at PS 328 (District 19), close to the 3 and L trains. The Breuckelen Academy is located at PS 260 (District 19), close to the L train. Our third campus will be opening in Summer 2004.



Essential Skills :


Ability to relate to young people and their parents, strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, proficient with Microsoft Office applications, email and Web applications.

Essential Experience / Knowledge:

Experience conducting assessments and counseling sessions with children and teenagers. Experience working with families and understanding of youth development issues. Experience working in racially, ethnically, and socio-economically diverse communities.
