College Students - Senior Team Leader

 

Position:

Senior Team Leader, Groundwork for Youth After-School & Summer Academies.
Position Dates:

Pre-service training (paid) from June 16-June 27, 2003. Summer program runs June 30 -August 15, 2003.

Position Hours:

Up to three overnight trips with students. Dormitory residence (provided by Groundwork) with other senior team leaders may be required. Ideally, candidates should also be available to work during after-school hours beginning in September (up to 15 hours per week).
Salary:

$2,500 stipend (pre-tax). Preference given to federal work study eligible candidates.

 


Position Description:


Senior Team Leaders work with high school students and professional staff (including graduate students, teachers and social workers) to teach and mentor children in one of three age groupings: 7 to 8 year olds, 9 to 11 year olds, or 12 to 13 year olds. Each Senior Team Leader is paired with a high school student Junior Team Leader to work with a group of 10 children of the same age and gender. The program curriculum combines literacy instruction with athletics, field trips, community service projects, and arts activities. Each group will also go on an overnight camping trip and a week-long trip to Boston. Groundwork for Youth operates during the academic year as an after-school program.

Organization Summary:

Founded in 2001, Groundwork, Inc. is a new nonprofit organization that helps young people in urban neighborhoods discover and develop their strengths, skills, and talents through high quality experiential learning and work programs. Groundwork for Youth, an academic and social enrichment program for children ages 7 to 13 living in public housing developments, launched in June 2002 in the neighborhood of East New York, Brooklyn. Groundwork for Youth gives college students the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children and to connect with other college students who are deeply committed to helping children in Brooklyn grow and succeed.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and model children's participation in all academic, social, and experiential education activities, both on-site and off-site.
  • Develop and lead a community service project for your group.
  • Ensure children's safety in accordance with program policies and procedures.
  • Assist certified teachers with literacy instruction.
  • Assist in planning, refining, and evaluating program curriculum.
  • Conduct weekly home visits to meet with childrenšs parents.
  • Please Note: This is NOT a 9-5 job. Senior Team Leaders must be extremely dedicated and willing to commit themselves to the challenge of doing whatever it takes to help the children in their group succeed.

Environment:

Work with experienced high performance team of nonprofit executives, certified teachers, and social workers. Work is performed under typical start-up operational conditions.

Qualifications:

Candidates must be enrolled in a full-time undergraduate or graduate degree program. Must have previous experience working with children in a structured youth program or K-12 school, preferably in a racially, ethnically, and socio-economically diverse urban community. Able to engage and lead children in small group activities both indoors and outdoors. Strong communication skills, strong organizational skills, excellent judgment, ability to work in a team in a variety of environments.
