On Friday, February 27, 2009, Groundwork for Youth’s Breukelen Campus hosted a Black History Month Celebration to honor the accomplishments of African Americans. Students performed skits and dances that reflected specific eras of Black history in the United States. "The Celebration was a true demonstration of the creative and cultural enrichment offered to students by Groundwork staff," said Erica Ahdoot, Associate Executive Director of Programs.

Groundwork Inc. was named among the ten semifinalists for the 2009 New York Times Company Nonprofit Excellence Awards. Now in its third year, the awards honor outstanding management practices and encourage innovation and communication among New York’s large and diverse nonprofit community.

The award will be presented in June and up to four of the organizations will be featured in special section of The New York Times this summer. On June 18, the winners will be honored at an awards reception at The Times Center and will conduct a “best practices workshop” to share their winning management strategies with an invited audience.

On Wednesday, February 25, 2009 Groundwork for Success hosted a Career Day panel the Groundwork Success Center.

The panel, which was moderated by Freshman Success Coach Nadia Dale, included professionals from a cross-section of careers including information technology, community organizing, fashion design, and small business start-ups. Each of the panelists described their day-to-day activities and discussed what they love the most (and least) about their chosen career paths.
