Team Director, Groundwork for Youth Summer Academy
Position Dates:

June 16-August 15 (9 weeks; 2 week training and 7 week program)

Position Hours:

Program operates weekdays 8am-4pm.
Salary:

$400/week (pre-tax) stipend.



Position Description:


Team Directors serve as coordinators across an age group (7 to 8 year olds or 9 to 11 year olds) to provide supervisory, administrative, and teaching support to college staff who are the primary group leaders. Team Directors work closely with the Campus Director to ensure the overall quality and safety of the program, and to ensure that child and staff needs are being met. Team Directors assist with the supervision and management of groups in all activities, including reading/writing workshops, field trips, community service projects, overnight camping trips, arts activities, and athletics. Kidzlit, a reading curriculum created by the Developmental Studies Center, is used by Team Directors to guide literacy activities.

Organization Summary:

Founded in 2001, Groundwork is a new nonprofit organization that helps young people in urban neighborhoods discover and develop their strengths, skills, and talents through effective experiential learning and work programs. Our first program, Groundwork for Youth, operates summer and after school programs in public schools serving children ages 7 to 14 who live in public housing developments in East New York, Brooklyn. Groundwork hires and trains local college and high school students to serve as team leaders for children ages 7 to 14 in a full day, 7-week Summer Academy and a four-day a week After-School Academy that features a reading-based curriculum, athletics, field trips, camping, and service learning. In addition to the team leaders, specialized instructors including certified teachers, teaching artists and other professionals play an active role in delivering services to young people. Groundwork launched its first campus serving the Unity Plaza housing development in the Summer of 2002, and will launch a second campus in Summer 2003.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Lead a supplemental reading and writing course for ages 7 to 8 or 9 to 11 in accordance with curriculum selected by Groundwork
  • Supervise field trips and overnight trips
  • Coach college and high school student team leaders on effective teaching and group management strategies
  • Assist with tracking children’s attendance and promoting strong attendance through consistent family follow up
  • Assist with parent communication regarding children’s progress
  • Assist with coordinating academic and social evaluation procedures
  • Participate in all program trainings, meetings, events and trips as required.

Qualifications:

Candidates must be enrolled in a full-time graduate degree program in New York City, or already possess a bachelor’s degree plus at least 2 years relevant professional experience. Must have experience working with children in racially, ethnically, and socio-economically diverse urban communities. Preference given to candidates in graduate education and social work programs.
