What's Happening at Community Organizing

Unity in the Community Health Fair : The "Unity in the Community Health Fair" was an overwhelming success. Over 400 people attended. Scores of people were tested for HIV, people received on-site dental services, STD counseling, and everyone who attended left with critical information about safety, health, and other community resources. Assemblyman Darryl Towns was present. For some fun pictures, please visit our Flickr "Unity Health Fair" photo site.

Groundwork Playground : Groundwork, in conjunction, with the Trust for Public Land and P.S. 328, broke ground on a new playground for the East New York community. The park - funded by the New York Life Foundation, the Charles Hayden Foundation, and other supporters, features basketball courts, an artificial turf field, a three-lane track, play spray, mosaic, benches, and trees. The half-million dollar investment transformed what was a half-block of asphalt serving as a makeshift parking lot.

For the past five months, students from P.S. 328 and Groundwork met weekly with a team of architects and designers to design the playground in a project coordinated by Groundwork's Director of Community Organizing. Students surveyed the community and presented the plans at several neighborhood meetings. The playground was completed in 2005.
